Carnival near purrfect

Douglas Carnival has been hailed a success.

It may have nearly rained on the parade but despite the damp weather Douglas Carnival proved a crowd-pleasing event.

Councillor David Christian MBE JP, Leader of Douglas Borough Council, said: ‘The Carnival has been very well received and, despite the weather, there were a good number of entries and a great atmosphere. This was a true community event that brought together so many organisations and businesses, all determined to make a great day out, followed by the After Party that provided an opportunity to showcase some of the outstanding musical talent we have here in the Island.

‘Bringing the carnival together was a massive undertaking so I should like to extend my sincere thanks to all those in the Council and Douglas Development Partnership and the many volunteers for their tremendous hard work over the past months. Thanks also to all the participants who entered into the spirit of the occasion and went to extraordinary lengths to create some truly outstanding floats and costumes and drew on their imagination to reinvent the humble wheelie bin.  And, of course, a special mention must go to the Council’s cleansing teams for coping admirably with the clearing up operation.

‘Now the Douglas Carnival has been revived it’s fair to say it will become an annual event, so in early September we’ll begin planning for next year’s carnival with the intention of announcing the date by the middle of the month. What I can say is that the 2015 Douglas Carnival will be bigger and better and, let’s hope, drier.’
